Haymarket has the easiest access to the city centre with a flat walk being the only one that you will find in Edinburgh and her seven hills. The very short walk, ten minutes, to Princes Street takes you through the West End Village and its boutique shops. Head in the other direction and you are within ideal walking distance to Murrayfield for the Rugby, or catch a bus to the Gyle and Gogarburn for work.
Equally close are the Exchange District, West End Offices and the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC). It is also a great place to play as well as work, boasting fantastic restaurants in the best sushi restaurant (Sushiya), Indian Restaurant (The Cavalry Club) and Chinese Restaurant (Chop Chop) in Edinburgh as well as local secrets such as First Coast and Kebabish.
The Modern Art gallery of Scotland whose collection includes Bacon, Freud, Hockney, Matisse, Hirst, Emin, Whiteread, Picasso, Hepworth and Douglas Gordon is a short walk away, as is the contemporary Dean Gallery and its great collection of Paolozzi sculptures amongst other gems. Next to the Dean Gallery there is access to a fantastic walk down the Water of Leith where Gormley sculptures can be found.
There is excellent access to live music in Haymarket which is the easiest place to grab a bus to the Corn Exchange and HMV's Picture House, as well as great bars such as Carters hosting live music. Other great bars are the Mercat (winner of many awards), Ryries or head to William Street for three more great pubs.
Haymarket functions as the transport hub for Edinburgh with train station, bus routes to Glasgow and everywhere in Scotland. It is on the right side of town for the airport and should have the trams running through it when they arrive, sometime in the next millennium.
