Serviced Apartments New Town, Edinburgh
The New Town of Edinburgh was built some time ago by men who knew what it took to build great streets and buildings and who have left a beautiful lasting monument to European urban design. UNESCO recognised it as an area that should be preserved for future generations and declared it a world heritage site, looking at it from the air and you can see why immediately. From the ground too its leafy, cobbled streets adorned either side with great Georgian architecture, gardens and parks. Take a trip through the Royal Circus, along Great King Street through Drummond Place and onto Bellevue Crescent and it is hard not to be blown away by the scale and style that is all around you. It would be unfair to consider Stockbridge the ugly friend of the New Town, they sit side by side to the north of the city centre, and it too is a fantastic looking area. Had Edinburgh not been spoilt with architecture it would not be overlooked as much as it is by almost everyone bar the Edinburgh locals. For the majority of Edinburgh folk, a place to stay in Stockbridge would be at the top of their wish-lists, take a stroll along St Stephens Street or copy the Queen, who apparently insists on being driven through Ann Street in Stockbridge when she comes to Edinburgh - it is quite special.
Beyond bricks and mortar, both areas are mostly residential but have some great activities to help unwind from the city centre just up the hill. Take a walk through the Botanic Gardens checking out their new visitors centre and the vast traditional greenhouses (a good tip for a cold day), or have a look in at the wee art galleries dotted all around. Go for a swim at the Glenogle Swim Centre hidden away in the colonies in Stockbridge, go watch international and local cricket at The Grange Sports Ground or watch The Mighty Edinburgh Northern RFC play on Saturdays in Inverleith Park.
If it's a drink you are after then you have some of the best pubs in Edinburgh here. The Bailey, Hectors, The Standard and Kay's Bar are great pubs and further east try The Cumberland Bar, The Wally Dug, Iglu or The Star Bar which are all as good as any bar you will get in Edinburgh. For a bite to eat Stockbridge is full of good independent restaurants and a couple of chains such as Pizza Express. The New Town has a couple of very solid eateries in A Room in The Town and The Magnum but ultimately the two areas are so close to the centre of town that the world is your oyster when you want to dine. And if you want oysters go to the Mussel Inn on Rose Street.
The best way to explore The New Town and Stockbridge is by foot, as with everywhere in Edinburgh, getting about is easy and it gives you time to explore the place and the oddities of the city such as the Floatarium and great wee shops like Mellis? Cheesemongers, Patisserie Florentine, Oxfam's Specialist Music Shop and many, many more.
