It is an area of world class urban design anywhere else in the world. Take in the view down Mellville Street towards St Mary's Cathedral or wander across Dean Bridge and take in a spectacular 360o view and the river and wooded parkland far below. The impressive buildings that make up the rear of Randolph Crescent or the view from here down to Leith and the sea beyond is an architect's dream.
Grab a drink at the iconic Rutland Hotel before taking a walk through Rutland Square and round to the West End Village, most of which is contained within William Street and Alva Street, the home of some of Edinburgh's finest independent boutique shops. The area is exceptionally close to lots of Edinburgh Festival venues, the Book Festival and the Film Festival. There is a lot to do on the odd days when there is no festival happening in Edinburgh and from the West End you have access to cinemas (art house and regular) and the newly refurbished Usher Hall. From drinks you should try Teuchters on William Street which has a great restaurant underneath it or Indigo Yard. For great eating you could try La Petite Folie or the Cavalry Club but you will be spoilt for choice as there are lots and lots of great restaurants in the area.
