Keep going down the hill and you are at the Dovecot Studios, turn the other way and you are at the goliath of culture that is the Greyfriars Bobby Statue, oh, and some piddily wee museum opposite that is holds within its award winning architecture the best of the Nation's artefacts, exceptional exhibitions and interactive areas for the child in all of us.

Like scary stories? Then check out Greyfriar's Cemetery, scientifically proven to be the most scary place on earth, by scientists. Total wimp? Then why not get a coffee in The Elephant House, the place where JK herself penned The Harry Potter, restore your nerves and start writing your own multi million pound pamphlet.

For the Festival, Newington really is the place to be;

"I was completely consumed by the carnival atmosphere surrounding Newington, there were acts going on everywhere. I could go from one small venue to the next taking in comedy, live music, comedy, improvised street dance, comedy, burlesque shows, comedy and more comedy or I could stay in one of the main areas such as The Pleasance or the Teviot and see act after act in one place. It's fantastic and later I'm going to get loose and hang out at that Underbelly area and see if I can trap me someone famous to take me home"

In all serious though it houses so much during August you would think it impossible. There are venues everywhere and the bigger ones such as those mentioned by Baroness Thatcher or the Zoo Venues, The Roxy Arthouse are home to act after act all day and all night (really all night), with several going on at any one time and bars where you can chat away in-between . The area is home to hugely popular garden areas such as the Spiegeltent, the Underbelly and others that are open late and let you chill with friends and a drink. There are food stands all over the place and a real party atmosphere everywhere you turn.

The area holds on to its greatness throughout the rest of the year too and is the home of Edinburgh University, its impressive buildings and squares are well worth a trip around. Whilst up there take the West Nicolson Street entrance to Edinburgh's Central Mosque and get one of the best curries you will ever eat from their kitchen, at a great price too and if it's too hot then cross the road to the Pear Tree and its great beer garden.

The area sits right next to Arthur's Seat and the park that surrounds it, the meadows and the old town so there is plenty to do at any time of year.There are museums and exhibitions to visit in the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street, with a great large new wing housing fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Royal Observatory, and the Surgeons Hall being just a few of note. For those willing to travel out of Edinburgh, Roslyn Chapel is a very short drive or bus journey away as is the Mining Museum of Scotland.
